Happy Friday everyone. Here are the latest happenings in room 209.
We kicked off this week by celebrating the International Day of Peace. Students signed peace t-shirts, participated in peace activities with special guests, and helped their first grade buddies assemble a puzzle of peace. Also, students walked to Lake Middle School on Thursday and participated in a Peace Celebration. They were able to hold a peace torch that has been all over the world and held by leaders like Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa! On Peace Day, parents and students came together to put on an amazing sale of Pulseras. Students are selling these Pulseras to raise money for kids in Nicaragua. Here is the project: http://www.pulseraproject.org/. They did such an amazing job that we almost sold out of the 400 pulseara In writing, students are completing their Rosa Parks narratives. We will be wrapping up our first unit on narrative writing, and moving into informational writing next. I have been able to share these pieces of writing with many parents, and am still working out the bugs with a few parents. If you would like to have access to your student's writing, please let me know. Our Unit of Inquiry is also coming to a close. Next Friday, October 2nd, students will be presenting their research about groups who have had their rights violated in our Rights Rally. We would love to have you join us at 2:15 for the rally and presentations. If you are unable to attend, I would encourage you to have your student give their presentation to you at home, or at least show you their project. Have a wonderful weekend, and check out the upcoming dates below. Mr. Flancbaum Upcoming Dates: September 25th - PTA Movie Night - Monkey Kingdom - Dusk on the field October 7th and 16th - Fall Interim Testing October 12th - Picture Retakes October 16th - Fall Festival October 19th and 20th - No school for students October 21st and 22nd - Parent Teacher Conferences I hope everyone has had a great week.
Here at school we have been busy. After much research, our writers are taking on the challenge of writing a narrative about the night Rosa Parks was arrested. They will become Rosa and write from her perspective. We are fortunate to have almost a complete class set of Chromebooks for students to work on these pieces of writing. This allows for greater collaboration among teachers and students, clearer feedback, along with opportunities to easily share writing with you! If you are interested, I have set up a shared Google Drive folder with each student. Right now it is shared between each student and me. I can add you to this shared folder so you can view the work your student is doing from home! Email me if you want to give this a try. I mentioned we almost have a complete set of computers. With our high numbers of students, we are short 3 computers. I have put up a Donorschoose project to get those 3 computers. Thank you to everyone has donated. If you would like to donate, or know someone who would, you can find the project here: One Computer For Each Student In Social Studies, we were visited by our third president, Thomas Jefferson. President Jefferson talked to us about his part in the Declaration of Independence, as well as the Constitution. Mr. Flancbaum Hello, and welcome to fifth grade at Brown International Academy! It has been an exciting first week at school, and I wanted to share a few of the highlights.
The week started with learning how our classroom and fifth grade works. Students learned expectations, routines, and came up with their own class constitution. Thank you for signing student planners each night. The real planners should be here any day now! If you have seen warnings/strikes written in planners, understand that I try to be as consistent as possible in following my classroom management plan. Notes in planners do not typically mean a major issue, just small issues that when corrected, help our classroom to be the best learning enviornment possible. We also did activities to learn more about each other and build a strong classroom community. William showed the class that you can walk on eggs without breaking them, and each student worked in a group to stack cups using only string and a rubber band. Check out the pictures and a video here. I look forward to seeing students' "Who/What" Projects today and learning more about who and what is important to our students. I could tell you more, but don't want to take up too much of your time. Thank you for your support this week, and I look forward to an exciting, challenging, and successful year. Please always feel free to contact me with questions in the planner, through email, or through a conference. [email protected] Reminders/Notes:
